Review:This is a very special book as it is built up from the letters Ellen wrote to her family in the years that she was stationed near Nome in Alaska. It's a description of day to day life up in Alaska (where the winter ice kept any ship from coming in), adjusting to that environment, living with and educating the Eskimos there. Also how things change over time when more trade starts with Alaska and gold diggers start coming in. The book has a very readable style which enables the reader to experience how life was over there. The very regular writing (eventhough postal delivery was very spotty) gives a good overview of daily things happening.
Good reading for those interested in the history of Alaska and its special place in the history of the ...
