Lawrence Lamb was one of the surgeons connected to the early United States of America space program. He gives an inside view on how the space program got a start in reaction to early Russian successes (like the first satellite in space, the first man in space). He describes the tension between the military interests in space travel (mainly the air force) and the scientific interests in space travel (which developed into Nasa during his career). A big influence on his career and on how he was seen by the military was his decision to not let the test pilot Deke Slayton go on one of the early Mercury flight because of a heart condition. This decision has followed Dr. Lamb for ages because the air force disagreed and he clearly documents his choices in this matter. Lawrence Lamb also tells about his contact with the vice-president Lyndon B. Johnson who turned into president due to the Kennedy assassination. All this against the background of the cold war, which was fueled in part by the space race and the possibility of nuclear missiles in space. A good book as background to the space race in the United States of America, although a bit USA-centric and with some slight errors in the beginning that annoyed me while reading.
