The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'No Yelling: The Nine Secrets of Marine Corps Leadership You Must Know to Win in Business':

Reviewer Koos van den Hout wrote:
The last part of the subtitle of this book "to Win in Business" could be changed to "to be a good leader". And indeed, yelling is not part of the approach this book tries to teach. But enough about the title. This is a good book and I advise people who are growing into management to read this book. Even without a military background you can learn a lot about being a good people manager. And good people manager will get good commercial results as a bonus, whereas good commercial managers don't have to be good at dealing with people. The 9 principles are discussed in chapters of the book: Integrity, Technical competence, Set the example, Self-awareness, Take care of people, Make new leaders, Commander's intent, Culture and values, Rehearsels and critiques. Each chapter has good 'war stories' as example, including stories of how things can be done wrong, how to learn from this, what to look for to improve on the subject and more reading and training material. Special mention is made of the programs the US marines have to help ex-marines succeed in civilian life and career. Even for Non-US managers, this book is in my opinion a good read. The author, Wally Adamchik, also does lectures on this very subject.

Book description:

Drawing upon real-life experiences from those on active duty as well as those now in the civilian sector, this book illustrates how to emulate the leadership principles that are the hallmark of the U.S. Marine Corps. Based on findings gleaned from more than 100 interviews, this guide presents the key factors that are at the heart of the marine's approach along with side-by-side comparisons of their application in military and civilian settings. A series of questions is provided at the end of each chapter to facilitate group discussion on topics ranging from integrity and setting the example to the commander’s intent and rehearsals and critiques prompting a personal analysis that leads the individual to review the process and develop their own methods for implementation. Questions from these sections also serve as the basis for a year-long curriculum for leadership development.
