Book description
Perhaps the most unconventional and literally breathtaking father-son story you'll ever read, My Friend Leonard pulls you immediately and deeply into a relationship as unusual as it is inspiring. The father figure is Leonard, the high-living, recovering coke addict "West Coast Director of a large Italian-American finance firm" (read: mobster) who helped to keep James Frey clean in A Million Little Pieces. The son is, of course, James, damaged perhaps beyond repair by years of crack and alcohol addiction-and by more than a few cruel tricks of fate. James embarks on his post-rehab existence in Chicago emotionally devastated, broke, and afraid to get close to other people. But then Leonard comes back into his life, and everything changes. Leon... Review:
"Sleeping on Potatoes" is the autobiography of Carl Nomura, born as the son of a poor immigrant family during the depression. One of the defining moments in his life was the internment of all Japanese Americans after the attack Pearl Harbor. After the second world war and the end of the internment, he worked very hard to get his education and to find a career in science. He succeeded and had a great career at Honeywell. Carl Nomura has a great writing style. In the book is his resolve to write three books, I am looking forward to the next ones. He writes in an entertaining and humorous way, without treading the more serious subjects too lightly. This book is a good reminder of how difficult the internment period must have been for th... Review:
Arthur Birkby describes his life growing up in the 20's, 30's and 40's in the United States. Growing up in a family of very "special" people with weird habits. His life has taken a few interesting turns and he does have a number of special anecdotes to share, about growing up and especially about his life in the army in the second world war. The reader can feel along with the growing up and turning into an adult that happens over the course of the book. On the whole I found this book not very engaging, the writing style was ok but not a page-turner.
