Review:
One of our family "legends" is the story of a particular busboy. He, laden
with fresh cutlery and napkins, would approach a table. You could actually
*see* him focus his concentration. Then, in a blur of moving arms and china,
the table would be cleared, cleaned and fully reset in a matter of seconds.
The intensity he brought to the task seemed out of proportion to the work, but
it does show that concentration skills can be applied in areas other than
sports.
This book is one of a series of works on improving the "mental game" in sports.
The five exercises (and one test) are quite practical. Although there are
variations, much of the material is based upon standard relaxation practise.
Much of the specific content of the book rel...

Review:
As with her "Concentration" (
see reviews), which related that ability to
relaxation learning, "Drive and Determination" is here related to goal setting
and beliefs. Also like the earlier book, the conceptual background is
declarative, rather than explanatory. Unlike it, however, this book is neither
terribly convincing nor easily applicable to areas outside of sports.
The "get rich quick" infommercials all have one statement in common: if you
want money badly enough, you can get it. (The trick, of course, it to get the
money without sacrificing your humanity, but the money mavens have long since
stopped worrying about that.) So, here, Dalloway proposes that if you want a
goal badly enough, you ca...

Review:If you've ever paid off one credit card with another, thrown out a bill before opening it, or convinced yourself that buying at a two-for-one sale is like making money, then this silly, appealing novel is for you. In the opening pages of Confessions of a Shopaholic, recent college graduate Rebecca Bloomwood is offered a hefty line of credit by a London bank. Within a few months, Sophie Kinsella's heroine has exceeded the limits of this generous offer, and begins furtively to scan her credit-card bills at work, certain that she couldn't have spent the reported sums. In theory anyway, the world of finance shouldn't be a mystery to Rebecca, since she writes for a magazine called Successful Saving. Struggling with her spendthrift impulses, she ...

Review:Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli? Affected by other people's moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you? HSP, shorthand for "highly sensitive person," describes 15 to 20 percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait--nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that, because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors, concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to u...

Book descriptionIn a twelve month adventure that started with Mark's first exposure to a spiritual workshop in Seattle in 1996, this book takes the reader on a spiritual journey from city to city. From Seattle to Costa Rica, San Francisco to Tallahassee, Phoenix to Philadelphia and lots of cities in between, people have gathered to learn from others as they rediscover the divinity within themselves. This book is a chronicle of the event called the "Gathering," and yet much more. It explores how Keith Varnum and others consciously awakened after decades of searching for spiritual answers and how hundreds of logically minded, corporate bound people like Mark Conrad, have spontaneously begun to access and speak their own truth. There is no book quite like Liv...
