Review:
Chapter one is a very brief introduction: almost a preface. Basic
statistical measures of failure and service are described in chapter
two. "Organizational Causes of Failures," in chapter three, tells
stories of some major disasters, but provides no structural
recommendations. Chapter four looks at analytical approaches to
failure prevention, covering the failure modes and effects analysis
(FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) methods that should be more
widely used in general risk assessment. The discussion of testing
types, purposes, and analysis, in chapter five, raises some very
interesting questions: if a thousand versions of a part are tested for
a thousand hours and only one fails, does this *really* support the
vendor's assertio...

Review:
Chapter one discusses the concept of open source software (and related
terms such as free software, freeware, and so forth), as well as
introducing some (though not all) of the major groups and players.
The text points out the difficulties of finding specific definitions
when dealing with a community and philosophy of this nature, and the
material is indicative and possibly useful, but even so the
explanations could be much clearer and less demanding of the reader.
The philosophies (and factions) of the open source community are
outlined in chapter two, as well as basic ideas such as copyleft.
There is further delineation of the reasons behind open source, which
does rather beg the question of why the topic wasn't dealt with better

Review:
The various titles in the "Hacks" series contain lots of individual
tips. The points cover a wide range of subjects and skill levels,
although most are intermediate to advanced. Most readers will,
though, find something of interest or use, regardless of their
specific pursuits: there will be something helpful, somewhere, and it
probably won't be too difficult to use or install. This book is not
quite the same. There is lots of fascinating information, but much of
the utility will only come with some exploration, additional research,
and experimentation on the part of the user. (Oh, and this is
definitely for Wintel machines, with some nods to Linux.)
Chapter one deals with the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System
programming) and (primari...
