Review:The problem with Word 97 is that Microsoft designed it to be all things to all people. And everyone knows what results when you try to do that--you end up pleasing no one. Fortunately, the company also made Word reasonably customizable. Word users with the proper information can tweak the application so it looks and behaves to their liking. Word 97 Annoyances shows you how to make the necessary adjustments. Say you're annoyed with the fact that there's a File Open button on the Word toolbar, but no corresponding File Close button. Word 97 Annoyances shows you how to remedy that shortcoming. Or say you've had it with Word's tendency to hide filename extensions. The book shows you how to fix that, too. Ditto for getting formatting to look rig...

Review:A computer in your shoe? Maybe so. Neil Gershenfeld, director of MIT's Media Lab, joins the ranks of techno-prognosticators with When Things Start to Think, and his focus is on how the future of computing will fit into our physical realities. This sensorial focus allows Gershenfeld to explore such science fictional ideas as wearable computers, nanotech circuitry implants, as well as such concerns as emotions, money, and civil rights in the new age of artificial intelligence. Gershenfeld provides a historical overview of the development of computers and extrapolates a world in which we will be forced to deal with things that think all the time. This can't help but reshape our society in ways we must try to imagine. You may be surprised at ho...

Review:
This material is preparation for the Microsoft Certified Professional
exams 70-067 (Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT Server
4.0) and 70-073 (Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 4.0). It comes with book, supplementary materials on
CD-ROM, and four month eval copies of NT server and workstation. It's
got everything you need to complete the course, short of two networked
computers capable of running NT.
Given that this is Microsoft's own product, the hype and promotion is
as overblown as you would expect. However, what did surprise me, and
pleasantly so, was the level of detail in the training materials. The
text does not give you an abundance of conceptual background on
operating systems or netwo...

Review:
The book points out that it is *not* a tutorial on Word. It is a reference to
remind users already familiar with the program of specific functions and how to
access them. The "tasks" chosen do give complete coverage of Word functions
(excluding programming), but do not delve into the applications quirks.
A troubleshooting guide and illustrations of various onscreen entities of Word
are helpful references--comprising thirty-six pages, even before the title
page! The individual tasks are well-presented, giving a description,
assumptions made about where the user is in the process, exceptions to the
assumptions, the steps to take, what to do if something goes wrong, and other
related tasks to check out. The writing is complete and clea...
