Review:
That UNIX is still seen as a "techie" system is evident in the number of "introductory" guides which are only technical references. "Learning the UNIX Operating System" (cf: BKLRNUNX.RVW) is well organized and written, but gets the user only to the very beginning of UNIX functionality. With "UNIX Unbound", Hahn has provided readable explanations (and interesting sidebars), and a very complete overview of the system, including the basics, X, utilities, man, shells, communications, networks, mail, redirection, editors, the file system and many other bits and pieces. Hahn is *not* interested in a quick and dirty introduction to Unix. He wants to present not only the Unix culture, but an almost mystical appreciation for the OS. How well... Review:
Scott Mueller takes seriously his role as the acknowledged guru of Intel-compatible personal computers and does an admirable job of making his books compete with Web sites about hardware. He does this by releasing a new edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs every year, or even more frequently, and by overshadowing the sites with sheer volumes of information. The latest edition of Mueller's respected book, the 13th, is positively massive--more than 1,500 pages of dense text and pithy illustrations, in combination with a CD-ROM that's nearly full to capacity with information. Plus, for good measure, Mueller and his team maintain a companion Web site for late-breaking hardware information. As you would expect, this edition is updated to incl... Review:
This guide believes a bit too strongly in the intuitive nature of the Mac. Although there is basic introductory material (including a helpful chapter on physical setup), a few operational tasks are left out. On the other hand, this goes beyond the fundamentals in a number of areas. You will find some general background on applications and multimedia. Stauffer provides a lot of information on customization--but this tends to be limited to his own areas of interest. There are also sections on disk exchange with MS-DOS machines and data communications which go beyond the scope of most introductory works. As with the Mac, itself, this book tends to make it easy to use the common functions--but it doesn't provide much help if you run i... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
What most people want to know about Linux is how to install it. Chunks of the installation material contained in this book came from the Linux Documentation Project files. Not just the information, though--whole paragraphs are copied almost verbatim. While this may be rather hard on the Project authors, it is good for the reader. The original content is disorganized, usually written at an inappropriate level, and of questionable accuracy. The book includes a subset of the InfoMagic Slackware 2.0 distribution (kernel versions 1.0.9 and 1.1.18). While over-explaining some points (you have no business installing Linux if you don't know what a "hard drive" is), the instructions assume the use of a slackware "fill in the blanks" install...
