Review:
Simon has put together an excellent overview of the promising, but possibly
underutilized, database technologies. Most of these are already available, but
are either poorly understood or have relatively few trained practitioners.
This book is neither a training nor development guide, but a series of
management and executive level briefing papers on the newly evolving forms.
The twenty three chapters in the book are divided into sections discussing
distributed systems and client/server, object-oriented technologies, languages,
supporting functions, and future trends. The material is presented in a non-
technical language, and provides analysis of both strengths and weaknesses.
Each chapter provides a beginning summary, conclusions, o...

Reviews (1) and details of Strategic Database Technology: Management for the Year 2000
Review:The biggest appeal of this book is its companion software with three separate versions of Linux on CD-ROM--Red Hat Linux 4.1, Slackware Linux 3.1, and Caldera Open Linux Lite 1.1. You'll be able to try out all three versions without going through the trouble of downloading (though these are old versions of each flavor). The text focuses on Red Hat Linux, though it's similar to the other two versions on the CD-ROM and you can easily transfer lessons to the others. The authors begin by explaining how to install Linux and how to configure it properly for your hardware environment. Then, they talk about key commands--file management and the like--before spilling the beans on how to run programs. The information on how to get DOS and Windows pro...

Review:
The software is the really important stuff here. This really isn't a book as
much as a software package. The main item is the 800K floppy disk bound into
the back. (The programs are compressed, so leave a bit more room on your hard
disk.) The book is only a sort of third party documentation for the programs.
Mind you, there is still a lot of work involved here. Finding and testing the
programs alone must have been a project. The title to the contrary, there is
significant programming involved in the programs here. Unlike many other
shareware collections, LeVitus has put together a legitimate "best of" here,
and tested them thoroughly. There are suggestions for troubleshooting, as well
as some tips on "easter eggs" in even these ...

Review:If ever a book on cyberculture wore a fedora and trench coat and leaned against a lamppost on a foggy street, this is the one. It is an unabashed look at the dark side of the Net--the stuff many other books gloss over. It's hard-edged, wisecracking, and often quite cynical as it pours over the reality of online scams, illegal activities, and simple annoyances. Wang's stated goal is to open the reader's eyes about what's really there. He shows what's being done, how it's being done, and how to avoid problems or even strike back. He begins with a chapter about the news media, and his message is that no source is to be trusted completely. He examines issues important to Internet users: the cost of getting computerized (with tips on how to fin...
