This is the book for C programming, written by the masters themselves. Not the greatest book to learn programming from, but if you can program in some language of the same level as C then you can learn C from this book and from doing it yourself and experimenting with C.

With Visual Explanations, Edward R. Tufte adds a third volume to his indispensable series on information display. The first, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, which focuses on charts and graphs that display numerical information, virtually defined the field. Samba, the Server Message Block (SMB) server software that makes it relatively easy to integrate Unix or Linux servers into networks of Microsoft Windows workstations, has to date been mostly explained as an afterthought. Most often, it's appeared in the latter chapters of books about Linux. It deserves better, and the authors of Using Samba have delivered exactly that. Earlier editions of O'Reilly's Running Linux served as central guides on installing, configuring, and using the OS. The third edition of this guide covers the kernel through version 2.2.1 and will prove especially useful to those with high technical aptitudes and a well-tested willingness to experiment with their computing environments. The explanation of how to rebuild the kernel--a particularly daunting task for many--deserves special praise, as do the sections on configuring network links and servers. Implementing LDAP provides a lot of information about Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) from the points of view of administrators and developers. The administration and configuration material emphasizes Netscape Directory Server 4, but it pays a fair amount of attention to OpenLDAP. (Microsoft Site Server 3 receives no mention.) In addition to product-specific coverage for administrators, there's quite a bit of general information about what LDAP is and how it works--the kind of information you'll need to decide whether LDAP implementation is worthwhile.
