Review:
In this book Eric S. Raymond explains the open source world and the development of Linux as he lives through it, is a part of it and makes a living in it. It is coloured by his (sometimes strong) opinions on matters like this. The book is readable for both the open source hacker who is part of this revolution and the manager who gets confronted by it and wants to learn more. The sociology is explained, the why things are done in certain ways which may be confusing or strange to people.

Review:
A number of people, particularly those who liked "Snow Crash" have said that they did *not* like "Cryptonomicon." I'm at a loss to understand why. "Cryptonomicon" is much closer in style to "Snow Crash" than either was to, say, "The Diamond Age" . Yes, this book is quite convoluted; so was "Snow Crash"; and there is the same accuracy in terms of technology. (The cryptography, while not exhaustively covering the field, provides an excellent overview of some basic concepts.) Similarly, the current work also flips back and forth between generations. The extent of switching, in fact, is sufficient that some have wondered if there is a message encoded in the "change of state" from past to present between chapters. (I haven't yet heard f... Written for readers with at least some Perl programming experience, Mastering Algorithms in Perl delivers a solid library of algorithms written in Perl for business and mathematical computing. From data structures to cryptography and more advanced mathematical algorithms, this book provides a worthwhile guide to extending Perl's coding capabilities. The best thing about Mastering Algorithms in Perl is the scope at which it covers the universe of algorithms while refraining from getting bogged down in academic detail. Besides basic data structures--a lynchpin of books on algorithms--the authors pro... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
A good book about using cvs, managing cvs but also about managing an open source project. I am involved in a big open-source project and I learned the basics about cvs when I started reading this book. Which opened my eyes to the possibilities of cvs, how to manage repositories myself and how to use the features of cvs to help me in the project. The book reads very well, it's written from the perspective of someone using cvs daily and finding the little details that make it work better. A very practical view (things like 'nobody uses this option' ) which makes it easy to read and made me eager to try stuff (hey, this is a great way to test the compilation daily!). The parts about running an open source project are good for all people involv... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
Subtitled Scaling Linux for Scientific and Enterprise Applications, Building Linux Clusters is an eye-opener. Build your own supercomputer out of obsolete PCs using a free OS: it's the stuff geek dreams are made of. This book discusses complex modeling, virtual world creation, and image generation; shows readers how to choose hardware; and explains cluster topologies. As the author notes, Linux clusters regularly make the list of the world's top 500 supercomputers. Not bad for a free system. Of course, running your own cluster isn't trivial, but the book convincingly shows how straightforward it can be for basic clusters, and how far ... Rest of this review on the detail page
