Review:
While the author seems to be sincerely motivated by a concern for security, this book badly needs more discipline, more material, and more fact checking. Not to mention a closer alignment with the stated topic. Part one is a general guide to data security. Chapter one, although titled "Intranet Security Trends," provides an overview of vulnerabilities, means to address them, and security policies. Security policies are covered in more depth in chapter two, and then really again in chapter three, although there are slight variations in emphasis. Chapter four introduces Internet (TCP/IP) specific topics, but still is dealing at the level of policy. Part one closes with a look at hiring or being hired (it's a bit difficult to tell) for ... Review:
This superior text on computer security is extremely rich in information, based on experience, and a pleasure to read. In addition, the author is donating part of his royalties from this book to various charities--initially, a foundation that fights child abuse. Escamilla begins by exploring intrusion prevention systems--firewalls, user authentication routines, and access controls--and telling how to properly set up such systems. He then describes mechanisms that identify and minimize damage caused by electronic break-ins once they occur. The author covers both system-level and network-level intrusion-detection systems, describing tools that attempt to catch not only outsiders who have broken in, but also legitimate system users who are up ... Review:
Data security is more than somewhat akin to the weather. Many people talk a good line about how important it is to their company, but few invest the time, money, vigour, and rigour to make it really effective. There are some very good, practical, computer security books on the market. Leaving aside the really bad ones, though, there are also a great number of works that take a rather pompous academic approach to the concepts only, leaving the actual details of real dangers and protection as an exercise to the reader. McCarthy takes a different tack. Each chapter in this book is an authentic case study, with the names changed to protect the unfortunate. While this means that the text can't be easily used as a reference, with quick ind... Rest of this review on the detail page
