Book descriptionHow do you secure your IP network without destroying it? The IPsec protocols are the only viable standard for secure, network-layer transmission on IP, yet they can wreak havoc on critical applications and other enhanced network services. Interoperability problems between vendors, as well as limitations in the basic technology, can cause problems that range from annoying to disastrous. This book tells you how IPsec works (or doesn't work) with other technologies, describes how to select products that will meet your needs, and discusses legal issues critical to IPsec deployment. This hands-on guide will help you to: * Analyze how and why IPsec may break existing networks * Combine IPsec with other enhanced IP services and applications * Det...

Review:This detailed collection of essays takes a practical look at the area of online security. While the editors of and contributors to Internet Besieged pull no punches in their cautions, their purpose is not to alarm but to inform. Given that electronic banditry and vandalism exist, what are wise system designers and operators to do about it? The contributors look at existing computer crimes--including password interception, electronic forgery, and virus passing--and examine the techniques now available to thwart perpetrators. The first of the book's five sections covers the background of the Internet from a security perspective. The second zooms in on the weaknesses of Internet-connected computer systems and shows how cybercriminals exploit t...

Review:A strong system of defenses will save your systems from falling victim to published and otherwise uninventive attacks, but even the most heavily defended system can be cracked under the right conditions. Incident Response aims to teach you how to determine when an attack has occurred or is underway--they're often hard to spot--and show you what to do about it. Authors Kevin Mandia and Chris Prosise favor a tools- and procedures-centric approach to the subject, thereby distinguishing this book from others that catalog particular attacks and methods for dealing with each one. The approach is more generic, and therefore better suited to dealing with newly emerging attack techniques. Anti-attack procedures are presented with the goal of identif...

Review:Internet Firewalls and Network Security succeeds precisely because of its restricted focus: half of this book is devoted to firewalls and packet filters. After a comprehensive introduction to the architecture and theory of firewalls, the guide documents several commercial and noncommercial packages, including a shareware product included on the bundled CD-ROM. One of the book's highlights is a fine chapter on defining a network policy. Coauthor Chris Hare is a contributor to SysAdmin magazine, and it shows. This section feels like it was written for real-world network administrators, whether beginning or experienced. There are some weaker points, including an introduction to TCP/IP and Unix basics with too many details for the beginner and ...

Review:Conflict isn't what it used to be. Technology analyst Michael Erbschloe knows the specs and the spooks on the inside of counterterrorism and antihacker units and sees a new set of potential attacks targeting governments, businesses, and individuals. Information Warfare: How to Survive Cyber Attacks looks at 10 basic strategies of attacking information infrastructure and suggests short-term and long-term defensive maneuvers.Sobering and stimulating at the same time, his writing is direct and suggests immediate changes we can make to shore ourselves against the new threats. Some are as simple as considering who we share information with, while others will require long-term policy initiatives and intense political maneuvering. The interplay bet...
