Review:
Bestselling author Stanley B. Lippman's Inside the C++ Model provides valuable insight into some of the internal workings of the C++ language. This book is a product of a decade of research at Bell Labs (where Lippman worked with C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup) and Lippman's considerable C++ expertise. Written with the experienced C++ programmer in mind, this book looks at how key language features are implemented underneath the hood and provides some guidelines when designing C++ classes. This title first examines how C++ objects work--showing the differences between C++ structures and classes. The author looks carefully at the varieties of C++ constructors, including default and copy constructors, data members, and initialization. Subsequ... Rest of this review on the detail page

Additional readings are recommended at the end of each chapter for those who want to explore further, and the last chapter in the book lists archive sites, lists, groups, and even a couple of magazines on Java. (And, Elliotte, while I could agree with you on most Java books, you might want to have a look at "Java in a Nutshell" (see reviews) and "Core Java" (see reviews).) The most interesting thing about this book, though, is that while the author states outright ... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
Written for intermediate and experienced programmers, Java By Example presents the Java language through examples, developing Java applets and applications from simple to complex. The book describes the Java language vis-a-vis other popular programming languages with particular emphasis on how Java relates to C and C++. The CD-ROM includes all source code and applets discussed in the book and the Java Developer's Kit.
