Review:
It may be thought that backup is a relatively simple process. Start the backup program (hopefully remembering to stick a tape in the drive first) and walk away. In fact, there are a number of other factors to be considered. Chapter one looks at backup basics, and it was enough to point out that the book was going to be rather limited in scope. For one thing, the material only looks at tape as a backup medium. For another, the emphasis does not seem to be on backing up of an NT workstation or server itself, but the design of a backup system for a whole network. While this topic is certainly worthy of a book, it does mean that a number of areas are not going to be addressed. Chapter two mentions some factors other than backup that can... Review:
I have a SCSI drive. For some reason this fact generates an event every time I start my NT machine. Event logging and auditing plays a role at least as central to data security as does encryption. At one time I worked for an outfit whose product was the basis of a theft retrieval system. Obviously our data did not age well, so event traps were written to alert the system administrator as soon, and in as many different ways, as possible. At the moment I am reviewing a product that is failing in a very consistent manner. Unfortunately, I can't get enough information about the manner, because I haven't yet found an event log that gets written in regard to this problem. Administrators of mini and larger machines, and of course all secur... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
Writing kernel-mode Windows NT programs--such as file-system drivers (FSDs), filter drivers, and antivirus programs--poses a challenge to even experienced Windows programmers. It's hard enough to get these programs to work, but getting them to live peacefully with other kernel programs and NT itself is an art. Nagar sorts through the mechanics of writing such programs in this book, which is no mean feat considering that Microsoft provides no documentation for its development kit. The author begins by orienting the reader to NT's kernel mode, detailing what runs there, how the various programs interact, and what you need to keep in mind when developing software for the kernel mode. The book then explores NT's key managers--I/O, virtual memor... Rest of this review on the detail page
