Review:
As the author states, Usenet news is second only to email in the significance
of its contribution to mass communications. Usenet may be the first "Internet"
application that many newcomers experience, and is often confused with the
Internet, itself. With thousands of newsgroups; some calm, some incendiary,
some useful, many trivial; and traffic volumes equalling hundreds of novels per
*day*, Usenet can be a very hostile place for the newcomer.
This book is a thorough compilation of Usenet information. As well as basic
Usenet news concepts (chapters one, two and four), chapter three describes the
basics of dial up and IP connections. Chapters five, and fifteen to seventeen,
cover Usenet customs and culture, describing the spectrum of...

Reviews (1) and details of The USENET Book: Finding, Using, and Surviving Newsgroups on the Internet
Review:
I am not quite sure what to say about Harrison's book, but one thing I *do*
know--it's unique.
The first two chapters give a very sound overview of what Usenet news is, and
how it works. Chapters three to six, and a part of chapter eight, give some
instruction on reading news with nn, tin, gnus, Trumpet Newsreader and
Netscape. Posting is covered in chapter seven, while eight to ten cover
miscellaneous advanced topics. Chapter eleven, somewhat oddly, talks about
email. Appendices include a table of geographic distribution limiters, five
good (and classic) articles on Usenet UNIX wildcards and regular expressions,
sources for the software described in the book, and the Spafford/Lawrence lists
of groups and alt groups.
The material ...

Reviews (2) and details of Using Netware 4.1
Review:
This book has the usual background material on Usenet, the Internet and Usenet
news. Please note that many items bluntly presented as fact are opinion or, at
best, extreme oversimplification.
More than half of the chapters are devoted to the use of "client" newsreader
software for Windows and Mac (primarily WinVN and NewsWatcher). A single
chapter briefly mentions what it calls "text-based newsreaders", and this gives
only the most cursory coverage of trn, tin and nn.
The list of "hot" newsgroups is limited and not particularly enlightening.
Not recommended.
