Basically, this is advertising for America Online.
America Online provides email, access to Usenet newsgroups, gopher and WAIS.
ftp and telnet are promised soon.
You get a Macintosh AOL interface program with the book.
Internet-specific information includes a chapter on netiquette, and a brief
"list of lists" (presumably only those available through AOL).

Review:
While not flashy, and not overtly technical, this book *is* a very serviceable
guide to communication for desktop computers. It covers the components,
concepts, and concerns at a level that is right for the department manager or
not-quite novice user.
The book may appear dauntingly thick, and not quite as lavishly illustrated as
its other Ziff-Davis kin, but it's probably easier to than it looks at first
glance. The intent is to educate, and the reading level and tone are suitable
to the task. You will not be able to set up your own network after reading
this book, but you will be able to start designing what you want, and either
talk intelligently to consultants, or direct your studies.

Review:
This book asks the questions of what is security, and can security be
achieved, for every level of audience. The text does, in fact, answer
the questions, but the answers turn out to be profoundly
uninteresting.
Part one explains some of the conceptual framework for data security
on networks. Chapter one is an introduction to the book overall. It
is not terribly clear about the scope of the book, but does state that
the material will look at failures caused by humans (both deliberate
and accidental) as well as short and long term machine failures. The
terms defined seem to indicate an emphasis on problems in the actual
transmission of data. Six types of failures are outlined quickly in
chapter two, although there is no explanation of...

Review:
A handbook generally provides practical information. It's the kind of stuff
that isn't rocket science, but is the reference material you can't be bothered
keeping in your head all the time. Common procedures that you don't use every
day, specifications that you might need quickly: the kind of stuff you want to
flip to, remind yourself about, and put back on the shelf until next time.
About the only material of that kind in this book is the (admittedly excellent)
list of vendor contacts. What we have here instead is an overview of concepts
and terms that might be related to a network. Cabling, medium access methods,
network protocols, advanced networking technologies, networking equipment,
computer peripherals, and network management...
