Review:
I appreciate the need for introductions to technical topics, written
for non-technical audiences. There is a need for librarians in small
institutions to find out about entities such as local area networks
without going through network engineering programs. This need is not,
however, well served by simplifying the topic until all information is
lost.
This book does touch on a variety of topics that are important to the
installation, setup, use, and maintenance of a small LAN. Appendices
at the end of the book may save time in designing forms for those who
are somewhat familiar with LAN installation and requirements. The
coverage, though, does not extend far enough to serve as an adequate
guide for implementation. In addition, the tex...

Reviews (1) and details of Local Area Networking for the Small Library: A How-To-Do-It Manual (How-To-Do-It Manuals for Libraries, No 67)
Review:
Stallings work is the definitive textbook on data communications concepts and
technologies for networks within a local calling area. This is a "ground up"
treatment of the subject, starting with the basic requirements for data
communications over distance, and working up to performance issues on the
latest high speed networks.
The material is suitable for courses which mix theory with the practical.
Topics covered include media, protocol architecture, traditional technologies,
high speed LANs, wireless communications, performance, bridges,
internetworking, and management. Current topics such as fibre and ATM are well
covered. (The next generation of the Internet Protocol is not, but is not as
important at the level the book covers.)...

Review:
This work is probably best suited to the manager responsible for the design of
a very large (thousand node and above) network. While students of network
communications could also benefit, there is a definite "business" tone to the
language. Early chapters look at business case considerations, while the final
two cover cost effectiveness and benefits.
The material is quite abstract, and does not apply directly to local area
networks as most people would think of them. The average small LAN builder is
primarily concerned with what NIC (network interface card) and NOS (network
operating system) to buy. The book does speak to this, but on a conceptual
level. The material is practical, but is not at the "Here, buy this!" level
desired b...

Review:
The authors have wisely limited the audience for this book. It is an
installation and management guide for those who, having no input to the design
or purchase of a LAN, are put in charge of a Novell shop. At this level, the
book succeeds as a reasonable and logical guide to setup.
After a few short chapters on general networking concepts, the book directs you
to file servers, workstations, printers, applications, backup and security. A
second section covers cabling and access methods briefly. This makes sense in
light of the audience of those who have "inherited" a system. Some monitoring
and troubleshooting tips end the book.
Although there are no surprises for those familiar with the Novell
documentation, the organization is appr...
