Review:
This is an overview of current applications and development in system management of inter-networks. It can be used either as a textbook, or as a precis and introduction into the various areas, approaches or tools. After some initial foundational material, the book looks at needs for integrated management, as well as various submodels of architecture, the OSI and Internet structures, and proprietary and gateway protocols. Five chapters look at management tools. Tested methods include component and system management, while the book looks to the future for application, enterprise and open questions. copyright Robert M. Review:
There is still a need for a good guide for those setting up dial-up IP (SLIP or PPP) connections to the Internet. Once the link is set up, however, most of the rest of the activities for accessing the Internet are plug and play, or point and click. Therefore, it is rather surprising that this pamphlet says nothing practical about the setup. There is some (brief) discussion of terms, but little to help the user actually use. The result is, therefore, little more than a list of the applications available on the net. Even this is of little help. Screen shots are taken from the normal array of Windows GUI client programs, but descriptions of use seem to have been lifted bodily from Hughes' earlier "Internet Public Access Guide" , and g... Review:
The preface states that readers of this book should already be familiar with ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Model). Quite true. This work is by no means an introduction; it is a highly technical reference for those wanting to use multiple protocols over ATM, or wanting to use ATM in a multi-protocol environment. There is a heavy emphasis on the use of ATM with TCP/IP. Chapters one, two, and three deal with concepts and benefits of ATM, itself, LAN emulation, and multi-protocol over ATM. Other topics covered include APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Network) support, Internet Protocol, PNNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface), switched virtual networking, and the future of the Internet Protocol and IPv6. Occasional IBM works in the past have... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
Franks has prepared an excellent introduction to establishing a net "presence". He does not include everything you need to get up and running, but provides the concepts and background necessary for an overall picture of Internet publishing. In addition, there are pointers to the instructions and software you need to get started. Most books today concentrate exclusively on the World Wide Web. This work covers Gopher and WAIS (Wide Area Information Service) as well as touching on other Internet tools. Ironically, the tool that gets the least space is the one with the largest reach: electronic mail. There is mention of the use of list servers, but little on their more advanced functions as mail servers or "mailbots". Along with chap... Rest of this review on the detail page
