Review:Historically, the problem of connecting communications providers' neighborhood substations with individual subscribers' homes and offices has been called the "last mile problem," or the challenge of the last 100 feet. In The First 100 Feet: Options for Internet and Broadband Access, a group of authors turns the problem around, presenting it as an obstacle to be solved and financed from the bottom up (by non-telecommunications businesses, communities of homeowners, and individuals) rather than from the top down (by telecommunications companies). In discussing the problem in a series of assembled articles, the authors explain the relative merits--both economic and, to a lesser degree, technical--of various connectivity solutions. They cover ...

Review:
Predicting the future in the technical world is a dangerous business,
particularly in a rapidly changing field like communications. Yet the
author attempts to do so not just in the short term, but over a range
of twenty years. If nothing else, you have to admire his courage.
And Webb does know the dangers: he points out, in chapter one, the
foolish predictions that have been made over the years. But he also
demonstrates the importance; to business, public policy, and other
endeavors; of prediction, and the possibility of achieving educated
guesses if you make the right kind of forecast.
Part two examines the factors that drive future development. Chapter

Review:
This volume (following an earlier beginner's guide) is obviously aimed at
sysops who have been operating a board for some time. Therefore the material,
probably legitimately, assumes a greater level of technical sophistication, and
a desire to move into a commercial, or at least self-supporting, operation.
The business advice is practical and important. For small business operators
it is probably unsurprising, covering the value of listening to your customers,
business plans, positioning and marketing. Three chapters look at the addition
of Internet service on a BBS.
In the technical area, Bryant again provides some very interesting and
potentially useful material. He may, however, have confused two possible
markets. For those in...

Review:
The title is ever so slightly misleading: it should probably read "Getting
*Others* Connected". There is much more here than anyone would need to get a
connection to the Internet for one account. The purpose is to get a business
or organization onto the net, and to establish that nebulous entity which has
become known as an Internet "presence".
That minor quibble out of the way, this is a very serviceable and complete
guide for those charged with linking an institution to the electronic global
village. The concepts and overall requirements are covered, and backed up by
just enough technical details to make the job possible. The tone of the text
is practical and realistic. Dowd's (rather bizarre) sense of humour is used to
good effe...
