Review:
This book is no worse than many other networking guides. But it's no better, either. Five of the six chapters in section one seem to be sales pitches for LANs. They cite the same benefits that everyone else does: shared software, shared disk space, shared printers and so forth. There is, however, no indication that a LAN may *not* be a cost effective solution, nor any analytical aids that might help in that determination. Chapters six and seven (the first in section two) both deal with planning but have little more to recommend than "get everyone involved," and "do it right". The remaining chapters have lots of graphics (as the book does overall), and random snippets of information, but woefully little material to help anyone actual... Review:
This is a very complete and well organized text on data communications. The intent of the work is to address the components of a computer network system, and this succeeds quite well. (Those interested in network specific topics, such as routing, should look elsewhere.) Areas covered include introductory material, layered protocols, polling protocols, satellite networks, local area networks, packet switching, X.25, digital networks, a brief look at TCP/IP, personal computers, PBX and upper layer protocols. Additional reference material is included in the appendices. Occasionally, the material becomes too specific and shows signs of age. The chapter on personal computer networks uses concepts and jargon which will be quite foreign ... Rest of this review on the detail page

Review:
This is the long-awaited 3rd Edition of Tanenbaum's classic book on computer networking. The finest network engineer I know (who was stolen from my previous employer by developers of IPv6) swears by this book, and it is arguably the best single resource for gaining a good technical understanding of modern networking in the mid 1990s. Very Highly Recommended. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review:
After the three prior works on PGP and related issues, Bacard's book reads like a popular magazine article. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily an advantage. Part (chapter?) one is a general overview of privacy as related to computers. The examples and arguments used, though, are chosen from such a broad spectrum that they actually weaken the position in favour of privacy and confidentiality. Most of the anecdotes relayed in the book have little to do with computers. The majority have to do with governmental or corporate activities over which the individual has no say. None bear on the function of PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) -- to encrypt local files and, in particular, those sent over public email channels. Chapter two discusse...
