The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers':

Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
UNIX internals books are not exactly thick on the ground, but even so, Vahalia has provided this work with a distinctive. This is the most complete, detailed, and up to date such book, and identifies differences in all the major UNIX families. An internals book is not exactly rivetting reading, but the author has made this one as clear as humanly possible. Topics covered include the process and kernel, threads, signals and session management, process scheduling, interprocess communications, synchronization and multiprocessing, file system interface, file system implementations, distributed file systems, advanced file systems, kernel memory allocation, virtual memory, other memory management, device drivers and I/O, and streams. Each chapter ends with a set of substantive exercises and a set of references. copyright Robert M. Slade, 1996

This book offers an exceptionally up-to-date, in-depth, and broad-based exploration of the latest advances in UNIX-based operating systems. Focusing on the design and implementation of the operating system itself — not on the applications and tools that run on it -- this book compares and analyzes the alternatives offered by several important UNIX variants, and covers several advanced subjects, such as multi-processors and threads. Compares several important UNIX variants—highlighting the issues and alternative solutions for various operating system components. Describes advanced technologies such as multiprocessor and multithreaded systems, log- structured file systems, and modern memory architecture.
