The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'UNAUTHORIZED® Windows® 95 Developer's Resource Kit':

Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
Andrew Schulman is generally perceived as being against Microsoft, against MS- DOS, and against Windows. The truth, as usual, is much more complex. He acknowledges the fact that MS-DOS is, in terms of use, far and away the most successful operating system in history, with Windows running second. A careful reading of this book suggests that he sees whatever blame there may be for the current lopsided computing environment lying not so much with Microsoft, as with a lazy and uncritical public and press. The book is complex, too. You will not get tips or utilities for easy Windows 95 programming. Detailed study of the book probably will, however, make you a better Windows 95 programmer. The text and associated programs examine the "Beta-1" version of Windows 95, with reference to earlier versions of DOS and Windows. This clearly shows that Windows 95 really *is* Windows 4, and also illustrates that most of the statements about Windows 95 are: (a) meaningless, (b) untrue, or (c) already true about the current versions of Windows. This book is definitely *not* for the user, and probably not even for the neophyte programmer. For the serious student of DOS and Windows internals, it should be quite valuable. copyright Robert M. Book description:

Great Windows 95 applications don't happen by accident. UNAUTHORIZED Windows 95 Developer's Resource Kit gives you everything - from source code and strategies to software and utilities - you need to make the software you write for this popular operating system as great as can be. Windows guru Andrew Schulman answers the questions every Windows 95 must know, including… Has Windows 95 been written from the ground up? Does Windows 95 make DOS obsolete? Is Windows 95 a completely integrated operating system? Is the 32-bit kernel completely independent from the 16-bit kernel? How is Windows 95 different from Windows 3.11? How do VxDs make Windows a genuine operating system? Why is V86 Mode a form of protected mode? Plus, UNAUTHORIZED Windows 95 Developer's Resource Kit comes complete with a try-before-you-buy version of The Programmer's Shop's Smash Hits For Programmers CD-ROM as well as Andrew Schulman's own Spy Utilities.
