Although it could be used for DOS configuration as well, the primary purpose of this book is to assist users who are installing Solaris x86. For those wondering about installing Solaris on a home machine, this would be cheaper than buying Solaris and then finding you need to upgrade a lot of hardware, first. However, while the book is helpful in a number of areas, there are significant gaps. Solaris CD-ROM operation is limited to SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) adapters, but the overview of IRQ and DMA settings included neither a CD-ROM nor SCSI listing. Appendix C does give suggested settings for a number of SCSI cards in the same way that Appendix F lists network cards. As the MicroHouse encyclopedias can demonstrate, though, this only scratches the surface of the available hardware. There are detailed, and likely useful, sections for different types of hard drives. (With occasional errors--IDE drives *can* be formatted without special hardware.)
