The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'Java Programming Language Handbook: The Ultimate Source for Conquering the Java Programming Language':

Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
Like pretty much every other Java book out there, this one assumes that the reader is a C or C++ (or both) programmer, and fairly well versed in object oriented programming. Unlike Flanagan's "Java in a Nutshell" (see reviews), it doesn't devote much space to the concepts of object-oriented programs and programming. Unlike the Arnold/Gosling work of similar title (see reviews), it is more practical and less abstract in its view of the language. Sample code is used extensively, sometimes seemingly in place of, rather than in support of, explanation. The sample code is interesting and useful, but often seems longer than is necessary for the topic under discussion. copyright Robert M. Slade, 1996
