The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'The Java Handbook':

Reviewer amazon.com wrote:
One of our customers' favorite Java books, by one of the best Java hotshots. Designed for all programming levels, this book covers the right topics and provides executable code examples for them. Includes lessons on advanced Java features such as multi-threading, networking, and GUI programming. This is the resource you've been waiting for!
Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
Naughton has written a book for hackers. As an introduction to Java, it leaves much to be desired. The tutorial content seems to be abrupt, charging ahead without much regard for the reader. The explanation of object orientation is the frequently cited "a-dog-is-a-mammal- is-an-animal" model of inheritance that doesn't really explain anything. On the other hand, Naughton does not assume any knowledge of any particular language, or even of programming. Everything necessary is there, albeit in a very terse "grab the keyboard and code" style. If you want quick, and are willing to spend your own time on learning, this may be the book for you. copyright Robert M. Slade, 1996

Book description:

This book gives readers a thorough grounding in Java, with a spotlight on creating executable content such as animation and continuously-updated screens for incorporation within Web pages. Readers of this cookbook-type guide will not only see lots of examples of Java applets but the'll also learn how to create them. Lots of insiders code is given throughout.
