Naughton has written a book for hackers.
As an introduction to Java, it leaves much to be desired. The tutorial content
seems to be abrupt, charging ahead without much regard for the reader. The
explanation of object orientation is the frequently cited "a-dog-is-a-mammal-
is-an-animal" model of inheritance that doesn't really explain anything.
On the other hand, Naughton does not assume any knowledge of any particular
language, or even of programming. Everything necessary is there, albeit in a
very terse "grab the keyboard and code" style.
If you want quick, and are willing to spend your own time on learning, this may
be the book for you.
