The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'The Internet Resource Quick Reference':
Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
Basically, this is a printed copy of four commonly cited resource lists, with
an additional resource by one of the authors. It is a separate volume
containing the resource section of "Using the Internet" (
see reviews).
The resources printed are the Spafford/Lawrence Usenet newsgroups description
list, the da Silva "list of (mailing) lists", the Yanoff "Special Internet
Connections" list, and the inter-network mail guide, also maintained by Yanoff.
To this, Pike has added a "Host Resource Guide" which starts with a list of ftp
sites and then adds a miscellaneous "catalogue" by topic. Oddly, while there
is no attempt to hide the authorship of the bulk of the book, and the fact that
the material is freely available in more up-to-date forms on the net, the file
headers have all been removed, and replaced with introductions which do *not*
tell you how to get the files. (For two lists, you are told in which
newsgroups they periodically appear.)
As noted, these files are available on the Internet, itself, and these same
lists are printed in numerous other Internet guides. This may be a handy
reference for trainers and seminar leaders for "where can I find ..." type
questions.
