The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'Introduction to Cgi/Perl: Getting Started With Web Scripts':
Reviewer amazon.com wrote:An important guide for developing dynamic content and forms to add impact and interaction to Web sites. Brenner is the author of cgi-lib.pl, the de facto standard library for creating CGI scripts with Perl. Used for everything from NASA space data to Byte Magazine's on-line comment box, this library makes CGI scripting intuitive and fun. An introduction should start with concepts and simple applications, and that is
exactly what this book does. The four chapters cover the ideas behind HTML
(the HyperText Markup Language) and CGI (the Common Gateway Interface), some
very basic programming in Perl, the basics of HTML form tags, and some
additional related topics. The text is clear and readable. The examples are
simple, illustrating the basic proposals without overwhelming the reader.
The book concentrates on Perl and the cgi-lib.pl library. This emphasis allows
for somewhat more sophisticated work without as much of the tedium of HTML
detail. Ultimately, however, it becomes a shortcoming of the book, since it
gives the authors an escape hatch to avoid discussion of some of the technical
details of forms that would be necessary for programming in shell scripts, or
using Perl without the library. Those who have access to Perl will find this a
useful start, but those who do not will be restricted even in the CGI work that
can be done.
