The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'Hands-On Netscape':
Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
This book does give you comprehensive documentation for Netscape. The only
shortcoming is, as is all too common, that the most important aspect of setup,
establishing a dialup IP connection, is glossed over very quickly. While the
Netscape material itself does start with elementary points, the perserverent
reader will find details of preferences, setup, INI files and a very useful
section on organizing Bookmarks. On the other hand, the authors do tend to
take Netscape's word as gospel for aspects such as security, and the work is
exclusive to the Windows version of the program when only a little additional
work could have made it platform independent.
The book does contain a lot of padding which has little to do with Netscape as
such. The chapter on "Searching With Netscape" is, of course, nothing of the
kind: it is searching with Yahoo, WebCrawler, Lycos and InfoSeek and could be
accomplished with Mosaic, Internet Explorer, Cello or even Lynx. There is a
hundred page ISP (Internet Service Provider) list which, interestingly,
contains the administrative site for my area, but none of the more than thirty
outfits who actually provide connections in the region.
For those who want to take advantage of the non-obvious features of Netscape
will likely find much of interest here. On the other hand, Netscape is still a
moving target. The material is based on version 1.1, and your mileage may
vary.
