Part one of the book offers a general background to data newtworking. This would be suitable, and helpful, as a quick introduction to the topic and jargon, particularly the business oriented buzzphrases. Part two talks about network devices, three the "larger" network protocols, and four LAN topologies. Aside from the lack of discussion of routing, there does not appear to be much reason for the emphasis on "subnetworks". Although the stated audience covers managers, techies, users and students, it is difficult to say who might best benefit from the book. Aside from the introductory material and an unusual structure, this might have been the data link chapter in one of the older "generic" data communications seminars. While the content has been padded out with examples from FDDI and ATM, the detail is too little for technical development or support, the concepts too narrowly focussed for general study, and the analysis insufficient for management or planning decisions. copyright Robert M.
