Reviewer amazon.com wrote:Figuring out how to use the Internet as an educational tool in kindergarten through 12th grade can be a tricky matter. Brendan P. Kehoe, Victoria Mixon offer practical guidance for parents and educators in a book that focuses on real-world issues. While it's loaded with valuable introductory information and resources, what makes the book stand out is its level-headed discussion of such issues as the computer's role in the conflict between educational paradigms and case studies of schools that have put the Internet to work in their classrooms. Includes a demo copy of Cyber Patrol software on CD-ROM.
Reviewer Rob Slade wrote:
Writing an Internet guide directed at use for children is more difficult than
it seems. Children's interests are open-ended, so there is little to define
topics to include and those to leave out. Most such books include a hodge-
podge of sites, contacts, and points of trivia that usually leaves the reader
cold. Following the minimalist style of Kehoe's "Zen and the Art of the
Internet" (
see reviews) this book, paradoxically, provides more with less.
Sticking to (kid) business, the book covers the basics, safety, getting
connected, resources, the net in education, and case studies in four California
schools. The material is practical and realistic, with reviews of Internet
filtering software concentrating on how a particular program functions, and
options for parental control. Case studies in the schools point out not only
the fun of new resources, but the problems of plagiarism and so forth.
