All too many works on any currently popular technology parrot banal generalities without providing much in the way of details. ATM is the current darling of the networking types, so there are any number of books which will tell you that ATM is fast, but won't really tell you why. Onvural tells you why. In detail. In mathematical detail, in fact. It is one of the few references which will be really helpful to those designing networks. It is also a good text for EE students working in this area of network communications. Unfortunately, for the non-engineers who have to manage networks and make decisions about ATM, not much after the first two chapters is going to be easy to follow. The author does the math, but little analysis; and the outcome, as they say, is left as an exercise to the reader. copyright Robert M. Slade, 1996
