The Virtual Bookcase Reviews of 'Oracle8i Backup & Recovery':
Reviewer Koos van den Hout wrote:Read this book before you need the 'recovery' part. This is a good book, using detailed example scenarios on how to backup, restore and recover Oracle servers. I have used the Oracle 7 version of this book and it has been a great help. This book even answers the question "How to backup Oracle when I can't take my database offline" which Oracle itself does not really like to answer in its standard manuals. For web services based on Oracle a great resource.
This book handles scripting of backups under Unix, NT and OpenVMS.. a great thing since backups need as much automation as possible.. the computer has to do the work and just beg the operator for new tapes and tell the operator the backup went fine (or failed.. which should trigger red flags!).
The 'recovery' bit goes quite deep. One hopes that one never needs it, but it is good to know it's documented somewhere.
