I response to the reviewer who thought that the book is perverted, I would direct him or her to the fact that the perversion is a necessary factor in Mishima's attempts to reveal the perverted nature of the post-war, Westernized, and corrupt culture forced on Japan.

This novelette caputures the self-possession of youth perfectly. It's characters exhibit the duo of naivete and arrogance. Mishima is a master at blending this with eroticism, as it is seen by a boy on the cusp of adolescence and his middle-aged parent.

I was also forced to read this book for class and i totally disagree with what the other guy said, i agree that it has some perversion in it yet it adds to the story line and it makes you look at soceity differently once you have finished reading it. It also makes you readjus your aims in life. Another good book is The stranger or The outsider by Albert Camus

This is a terrible book. I was forced to read it for a class, if not I would have out it down after the first nasty chapter. It's perversion and violence are unnecessary and add nothing to the story line. I hope that you won't subject yourself to this torture!
